Sea Pearl

 

This kayak is a yet another take on the Black Pearl concept. Black Pearl is one of the most popular of my kayak plans for homebuilders, and the most positively reviewed - a kayak where the normal marketing common sense has been suspended in favour of breathtaking perfomance. A kayak for those resourceful paddlers who know exactly how to deal with difficult situations, do it right and with split second timing - a kayak for pure unaffected paddling joy and with no practical usefulness whatsoever.

Sea Pearl may be seen as a less extreme and less demanding Black Pearl. It has a little more room for knees and feet than the real Black Pearls - you do not have to sit with straight legs under a low deck. It gives you a second to react after a erratic paddle stroke, before turning you upside down. It reacts quickly to manoevering strokes, leaning and weight shifts but not instantly as the Black Pearl. You do not have to be a master of greenland paddling and rolling to enjoy the Sea Pearl, but you will probably become one - intentionally or not.

In short, the Sea Pearl is a Greenland kayak for those starting out on the Greenland path, but not quite ready for, or interested in, the real deal.
But you can of course use the Sea Pearl as an ordinary sea kayak, if you do not care for Greenland. You may have to accept a little quicker manoevering, that you may come to enjoy waves a little more and even that you may be tricked into learning a roll or two - but that is all...
